Easter 2023: Revelation One
In a moment of time, John was granted a picture: the book of Revelation. And just like how we see different things at different moments in time, we also have various pictures of Jesus in our minds. But during Holy week, we witness Jesus in a different light, engaging in debates, healing people, and ultimately dying on the cross. Then, in Revelation 1, we see Jesus revealed to John on Patmos in all his glory, shining like the sun, with hair like white wool and eyes like flames of fire.
As we reflect on these images, we need to remember that Jesus has a message for us. He is speaking to the seven churches in a specific time and place, and we must be willing to listen. Let us hold onto this image of King Jesus, shining like the sun, and be open to hearing his words to us.
Jesus' message is not just for the churches of the past, but for us today as well. Are we willing to hear what he has to say? Are we open to seeing Jesus in a new light and letting his words challenge us?
In the midst of the chaos and uncertainty of our world, we need to be reminded that Jesus is still on the throne, shining in all his glory. He holds the seven stars in his hand and his voice thunders like the roar of many waters. He is powerful and majestic, and yet he speaks to us with tenderness and compassion.
So as we read the book of Revelation, let us not be afraid of the visions and the symbolism, but let us focus on the message of hope and redemption that Jesus has for us. Let us be willing to hear his words and let them transform us from the inside out. And let us hold onto the image of King Jesus, shining like the sun, as a reminder of his power and his love for us.
Sermon Notes
The Village Church’s sermon podcast is more than just a weekly message. It is an invitation into the great and ongoing story of God’s work in the world. Pastors Eric, Mark, Susan, Daniel, and other leaders open the Scriptures not as a collection of abstract ideas but as the living, breathing witness to God’s kingdom breaking into our midst. Each episode is a call—not merely to listen, but to take part, to step forward into the life of faith with renewed vision and purpose.
Week by week, the pastors and leaders explore the deep rhythms of Christian discipleship—prayer, fasting, generosity—not as isolated duties but as part of a larger, richer, and more beautiful whole. They unpack these ancient practices in light of Jesus himself, the one in whom heaven and earth have come together. But they also turn their attention to the realities of everyday life—relationships, finances, the struggles and joys of being human—demonstrating how the gospel is not merely about what we believe but about how we live as God's renewed people in the present age.
